The University will facilitate the following for The Centre For Research in Nanoscience & Nanotechnology :
The Honorable Finance Minister, Government of India earmarked Rs. 100 crores to The University of Calcutta for pursuing research in emerging sciences and technologies of national importance. This was in recognition of the glorious contributions of University of Calcutta for last 150 years in almost all branches of science, technology and arts. Consequently, The University of Calcutta took this as an opportunity to set up a Centre for Research in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology to meet the global challenges. Based on the diversified expertise and experience available in the University in Physical, Chemical and Biological science and technology, The University of Calcutta has focused on creating a centre on nanofabrication and characterization along with fundamental scientific understanding.thereby creating a proper synergy among the available diversified research areas in the university. The main thrust will be on the evolution of techniques of nanofabrication guided by the requirements of high degree of control at the nano-scale. Further hierarchical integration is needed to incorporate nanostructures into macro-scale products. This may combine directed molecular assembling techniques with top-down, macroscopic fabrication. Highly efficient manufacturing processes are also envisaged, reducing material use, energy consumption and minimizing environmental degradation, thereby enabling high-rate, cost effective production of new energy efficient products.
The University will facilitate the following :
- Research & Development infrastructure for the growth and synthesis of electronic, chemical and biological materials.
- Optical, electrical, magnetic and electron spectroscopic characterization facilities.
- Full facilities for fabrication of nano-structure electronic and optoelectronic devices with an emphasis on nanoscale CMOS fabrication.
- Extensive computing facilities through the setting up of a Computer Cluster.
Vision : Creation of a centre of excellence for interdisciplinary research in the Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, including Physical, Chemical and Biological Sciences.
